AutoSlash is an application to assist users in finding the best possible deal on car rentals. The app tracks changing rates, discounts, and coupons to find the very best price.Show more screenshots »
AutoSlash was founded in 2010 to provide the most competitive car rental rates, from various companies, for its users. President Jonathan Weinberg has indicated that his application targets the traveler who is looking for the lowest price, but doesn't want to be chained to the computer continuing to search for deals. Unique visitors of between 17,000 - 30,000 per month visit the application. The site has been featured in The New York Times, BBC, Los Angeles Times,CNN, the Today Show, and more.
After choosing a rental, the app continues to monitor the Internet for discounts, coupon codes, and other special deals or lowered rates. If found, the application automatically applies these to the user's current booking, resulting in even lower rates.
The home page allows users to either search for a rental or track a rental that has been booked elsewhere. To search for a rental, users enter whether they will pick up the car at an airport or near an address. Airport city or code, whether the car will be dropped off at a different location, pickup and dropoff dates and times are asked. This is the minimum information needed to search. Users may also click more options and choose car class, a particular rental company, and indicate whether they have a discount code or frequent renter ID.
It was somewhat frustrating that information had to be resubmitted several times as no cars fit the request, which was a at a local airport, one week rental for any type of car with air conditioning and automatic transmission. Changing the pickup location to a larger city airport still yielded no results, despite numerous date and time changes.
As it seems unlikely that no cars would be available, a search using the same criteria was used at Hertz and Budget offered many results. Attempts were made to use an address and place of interest for pickup and still "there are no cars available that fit your request" was the result.
While this seems like a great application, during testing no cars were found using 10 dates, various times and locations for drop off and pick up. Even with no preference in air conditioning, car type, and transmission type, no results were given.
Returning to the home page, while the site claims to check several rental companies, it appears under the dropdown menu for companies that they only check Payless, SIXT, and Fox Rent a Car. This could be a major reason for the issue. These companies do not offer services in all areas of the US. A Payless search resulted in only chauffeured cars from the locale listed. There is a box above the search box for information about vendor availability that should have more info right on the home page. It indicates the removal of the major vendors.
This basically means that major rental car companies are not searched and results may be very limited or nonexistent. This is a huge problem for users without access to the three companies listed. After looking at the three rental sites monitored by AutoSlash, a search was conducted for a city that appeared to be accessible.
The new search yielded a list of types of cars. Users may choose from Economy, Compact, Intermediate, Standard, Full Size, Premium, Van, Convertible, and SUV. Once chosen, a total is given, as well as an example of the types of vehicles and the opportunity to upgrade. Users may choose additional equipment if needed, such as bike or ski racks. Users may then review the choices, price, and policies of the rental company. Payments are to be made at the reservation desk, not via AutoSlash. At this time, registration is completed. The reservation details may then be reviewed again and the reservation is made. No charges will be made until the vehicle is picked up.
During the time between making the reservation and the pickup, AutoSlash will monitor the Internet for discounts, coupons, or other means of lowering the cost to the user and automatically apply them to the cost of the rental car.
Registration is completed at the end of the experience, rather than the beginning. First and last name, frequent renter number if applicable, trip contact information, and flight information (optional)are completed.
There is no cosst for using AutoSlash, however users are responsible for paying car rental fees as agreed upon.
If SIXT, Payless, or Fox Rent a Car are available in the desired area, then this application will be beneficial. This information should be noted more prominently, other than in a dropdown menu that is "optional" and a box with a "message about vendor availability", and therefore may not be seen. This app is of no use to those who wish to use major rental companies or if these three companies are not operating in their area of need.
